AI Mental Health Companion

AI Mental Health Companion

This case study for WeTalk highlights my ability to turn a technical API subscription into a meaningful, human-centered product. I successfully navigated severe technical constraints from Eleven Labs and Wix to deliver a premium AI companion that prioritizes mental well-being and user privacy.

Platform :

WIX

Country :

United States

Brief Context

  • The client sought to transform an Eleven Labs voice subscription into a fully realized mental health platform built on Wix.

  • The core mission was to provide judgment-free, 24/7 companionship for individuals facing challenges like anxiety, depression, and relationship issues.

  • Unlike generic chatbots, WeTalk was designed to offer specialized expertise through unique voice models (Samantha for relationships, Pulse for career clarity, etc.), creating a warming, sophisticated, and calming environment for vulnerable users.

Challenges

Challenges

Technical Constraints (Web Sockets) :

The Eleven Labs socket was restricted to a fixed position on the bottom right; I had to find a creative UX solution to make this non-standard CTA intuitive without backend access.

Wix Platform Limitations :

Building a premium, high-tech AI experience within a CMS required pushing the platform's visual limits to avoid a "template" feel.

User Motivation & Retention :

Moving beyond simple "chatting" to provide users with tangible progress and a reason to return to the platform.

Privacy & Trust :

Communicating radical privacy—"Nothing Saved, Nothing Shared"—to users sharing deeply personal mental health struggles.

Design Approach

  • I adopted a Calm & Premium Visual Direction, utilizing subtle gradients, glassmorphism, and sophisticated micro-animations to create an atmosphere of safety and modern luxury.

  • To solve the "Hidden CTA" problem, I designed a custom Doodled Arrow and supporting UX copy that points directly to the Eleven Labs socket, effectively guiding the user's eye to the "Talk Now" trigger.

  • To differentiate the product, I introduced a Goal-Oriented UX Framework. After every conversation, the AI generates personalized, actionable goals (e.g., "Reach Out to Someone" or "Notice the Good Stuff"). This transforms the chat from a fleeting moment into a tool for active self-growth.

  • On mobile, I implemented Progressive Disclosure for selecting companion types, allowing users to swipe through models representing different AI personalities (Samantha, Pulse, Viol) based on their specific mental health needs.

Key Learnings

Design as a Technical Bridge :

I learned that when you can't change the code, you must change the design; using visual cues like doodles can fix functional UX gaps.

The Power of UX Copywriting :

This project proved that for mental health apps, the tone of voice is just as important as the UI—the copy must be "crafted to heal."

Advanced Wix Customization :

I mastered the integration of Lottie animations and custom CSS within Wix to deliver a product that feels like a bespoke, hand-coded app.

Privacy-First Design :

Learned how to visually communicate security through clean, transparent layouts that reassure users their conversations stay private and local.
